Prayer is bonding (with a higher power) and meditation is self-awareness. You can do both at the same time or you can do them separately, but they are not one and the same.

Meditation is building inner calmness and more about relationship with the mind or self while prayer is about relationship to the deity the we believe. Religious people could pray and meditate at the same time while some people prefer to meditate only. I hope I’m right on this.

Prayer is a form of meditation. At least that is how I see it.

You can meditate by speaking with your God directly and having a conversation with him/her and call it prayer.

Is prayer and meditation the same thing?

I often hear people use both words kind of in the same regard. I know "to pray" is to speak to a higher power in a humbling manner but meditation is said to involve getting in touch with your high power through deep though and energy. They sound a lot a like to me.
